Every year, two million Australians will experience hunger. But, over the same period, 200kg of food is wasted for every man, woman and child in the nation.
Melbourne food charity FareShare is doing something about it by rescuing surplus, quality food from supermarkets, farmers and other businesses.
With the help of 800 regular volunteers, FareShare cooks this food into 25,000 free nutritious meals a week for local charities – such as soup vans, homeless shelters, food banks and school breakfast programs. They do this in Australia’s largest charity kitchen based in Abbotsford.
In 2013 Altro floors were installed in the commercial kitchen and still look as good as they did the day they went in.
A key criteria for FareShare was to have a floor that met with high occupational health and safety standards to keep staff and volunteers safe from slips and trips.
Chris Mitchison, Kitchen Manager at FareShare said: “We were after a floor that we could put down and not have to worry about. Altro has been everything we were after in a floor and lives up to all our expectations. It looks great, cleans easily and provides the safety needed in a busy commercial kitchen.”
Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance (PTV ≥55 R12) and is designed to minimise risk in wet and greasy conditions for the lifetime of the flooring. As well as helping to keep staff safe from slips, it also helps reduce their fatigue, thanks to its 3mm thickness which provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot.
